Uncharted 3 - What we think

posted on 6 November 2011 | posted in Games News

Uncharted 3 - What we think Autumn 2011 sees a almost constant stream of top class video games coming out on all platforms. There is probably no better time to be a gamer. With the amount of great and hyped games coming out it’s easy to lose track but one game which definitely has remained firmly on the radar is Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
Months of drooling over the trailers, glee over the multiplayer beta and wild mass guessing (Nathan Drake’s love interest Elena pregnant???) have all come down to this: release day. Gamers abroad have already gotten their mitts on the game earlier this week and here in Nigeria at Omagames we’ll have Uncharted 3 as from Friday, November 4th. Early feedback says we are definitely in for a treat.
To celebrate the release of one of the most anticipated games of the year we decided to look back and remember the moments and elements from Uncharted 1 and 2 that made this series great and made us rub our hand in excitement for Uncharted 3. Note that there are spoilers, so if you haven’t played the other two games and you’d like to, look away.
The Hero- Uncharted’s hero, Nathan Drake is a likeable, wise-cracking guy who manages to be both bad-ass and vulnerable. In a world of identikit military grunts and anime-styled characters with big hair, Drake is an everyman that the player can probably identify with. It also helps that the voiceover work is so good and really brings the character to life. Little touches like Drake complaining “more ledges” after an extended platform climbing sequence really help echo the gamer’s feelings.
The Story- Uncharted’s story is really well done for a video game. The dialogue is sharp and witty and you want to play through the story as quick as possible. The way cut-scenes seamlessly flowed into the gameplay was amazing. I will never the forget first few moments playing Uncharted 2 which was actually my introduction to Playstation 3.
He’s/She’s Dead...No they aren’t- Drake is assisted on his adventures by Sully, a sleazy but ultimately good hearted older man, and his love interest, the reporter Elena. Together they make one of the best teams in gaming since Super Mario Bros 2. The writing is so good that you come to care about them as much as the main character which is why it stings a bit when they are ‘killed off’ and why most players feel something akin to joy when it turns out they are actually still alive.
THAT train level- In Uncharted 2 midway through the game you find yourself on a moving train. What follows next is a mixture of graphics and gameplay coming together to create something on par with the best Hollywood action sequences.
The Looks- Both Uncharted games (especially the second) are so pretty we actually replayed them when we got a bigger, better TV, just so we could bask in the visual spectacle. Even in the aging original game, stunningly beautiful landscapes abound and you just have to stop and gawk when you’re not under enemy fire.
All this reminiscing is making me really excited to play Uncharted 3. Don’t forget if you’re in Nigeria, you can visit the Omagames website www.omagames.com to pick this up as from November 4th. Happy playing!
